-1956 Ferrari "Girard-Perregaux" watch given as a 65th birthday gift to engine designer Vittorio Jano by Lancia-Ferrari D50 driver Eugenio Castelotti. This watch is a 34mm manual winding with the Prancing Horse at 6 oclock, a cream face and two subdials. There is some scratching to the sides of the case but its in otherwise fine condition for its age. The replacement strap is black crocodile and in perfect order. Vittorio (Apr.22/1891-Mar.13, 1965) is probably one of the most influential Italian automobile designers, starting early with Fiat in 1911, then moving to Alfa Romeo in 1923 where he designed the P2, 1750, P3 & Alfetta. He later joined Lancia in 1945 and his V6 & V8 engines replaced the older Lampredi and Colombo designs. Jano is most well known for designing the Lancia D50 which raced at the hands of Ascari and Castelotti in 1955, which later became the Lancia Ferrari D50 in 1956 after Lancia sold out to the Scuderia. This watch was on display at the Ferrari Factory for some time and is a real piece of Alfa Romeo/Ferrari/Lancia history.
